The generation of ultrafast light impulses in the > infrared and terahertz regions. These impulses can be used for ultrafast spectroscopy. The setup illustrates a 200 gigawatt invisible infrared laser which is directed at a very hot focal point. This way, air molecules are ionized into plasma, creating the pink and orange colours in the background. The focal point is the small, white star-like spot in the centre of the picture.
