14 S CIENCE PA RK House of intelligent PHO On the special date of 12 December 2012 (12.12.12), the 200,000 m2 Scion DTU facility celebrated its fiftieth anniversary, secure in the knowledge of being the largest science park in Denmark. Today, 200 companies are customers of Scion DTU, but the facility has no intention of resting on its laurels. There are firm plans to expand the business in 2013, both the physical framework and the range of services offered. “Our close physical link with DTU is considered extremely attractive. It helps to draw in the right companies,” explains Steen Donner, CEO of the science park. These companies include hitech Danish start-ups, as well as the development departments of major, primarily overseas, companies. A powerful reason for companies to choose the science park can be found in a recent report from the analysis company Damvad, which states that, on average, companies with a working relationship with DTU have 10 per cent higher productivity per member of staff than those which do not partner with DTU. It is important to note that the companies mentioned in the report are comparable, i.e. they operate in the same sectors and are of around the same size and age. “The moment a company starts to work with DTU, the relationship begins to generate a lot of value for both the company itself and for society in general. So it is a question of setting up as many partnerships as possible and this is one of our key assignments as a science park,” says Steen Donner. Involved in Copenhagen biotech DTU is also involved in the Copenhagen biotechnology science park—COBIS—which is a joint venture with Symbion, another science park. “Even though we are already TO DTU A science park is more than simply a place to lease state-of-the-art laboratories and office facilities. The Scion DTU science park is built out of ‘intelligent bricks’ and is currently celebrating its fiftieth anniversary in the midst of expansion plans—both physical and commercial.
