Annual r epor t DTU alumnus Vice President Junqi Yan took time out to visit her ‘old’ university during an official visit to Denmark. DTU’s prototype magnetic refrigeration machine, results from which were presented in Grenoble. 15 September 17 September 17 September P rotein research Work is started on the development of an interdisciplinary Center for Systems Proteomics at DTU. Proteins will come to play a crucial role as we work to solve the challenges of the future in the fields of the climate, energy, food and combating illness. The protein platform will allow DTU to contribute at the highest international level. The Villum Foundation is backing the centre with a grant of DKK 10.7 million (EUR 1.5 million). 28 September N ASA prize for DTU The American space agency NASA awards DTU a prize for the university’s participation in the Juno mission which is scheduled to reach the planet Jupiter in 2016. DTU Space has enjoyed a fruitful partnership with NASA for many years, and delivered a number of key instruments for the Juno mission. 2 October  Dare to know The Danish Council for Independent Research’s Sapere Aude Programme awards grants to seven elite researchers, including Professor Anja Boisen from DTU Nanotech, who is conducting researching into nano and sensor technology. Other grants are simultaneously awarded to 20 promising young researchers including Assistant Professor René Wugt Larsen, DTU Chemistry, for research into spectroscopy of molecular clusters, and Associate Professor Kristian Mølhave, DTU Nanotech, for research into microchips and fluids. Sapere Aude means ‘dare to know’. 2 October N anomedical centre DTU officially opens the Center for Nanomedicine and Theranostics, a new, interdisciplinary centre which focuses on developing new technologies for using nanomedicine to diagnose and treat serious illnesses such as cancer. The centre is run jointly by DTU Nanotech, DTU Chemistry, DTU Vet and DTU Nutech. 11 September  Among the best in the world DTU moves up from 150th to 132nd position on the list ranking the best universities in the world. The list is compiled by QS World University Rankings. 15 September  Vice President of China visits DTU One of the most influential people in China visits DTU: Vice President Junqi Yan, a DTU alumnus. As a part of the official visit to Denmark, she calls in at DTU Lyngby Campus where she and her delegation are given an introduction to the work done by DTU. 17 September  Magnetic cooling Christian Bahl, Senior Scientist at DTU Energy Conversion presents test results from DTU’s magnetic refrigerating machine at an international conference on magnetic cooling in Grenoble. The prototype which, with support from the Danish Council for Strategic Research, is one of the best in the world, measured on performance. The technology will now be developed into energy-efficient magnetic heat pumps as part of a new project. 54 Technical University of Denmark
