Acknowledgements Copenhagen Research Forum was established by the University of Copenhagen, Technical University of Denmark and the Capital Region of Denmark in autumn 2011. The aim was to create a forum where researchers in Europe, independently and without any other agenda, could discuss and contribute to the European Commis- sion’s proposal for the next Framework Programme for Research and Innovation: Horizon 2020. In the autumn of 2011 more than 600 researchers were invited to participate in a virtual discussion forum. I would like to thank every- one who contributed with ideas and suggestions. I would also like to take the opportunity to thank those who have committed time and effort to making the Copenhagen Research Forum successful.
