ABSTRACT Effi cient and sustainable transport for people and goods is vital for Europe’s prosperity. The transport sec- tor’s overall mission to provide mobility is constrained by a complex set of multi- ple additional considerations which can be summarised in the comprehensive concept of “environmental and societal sustainability”. The complexity of the transport (sub)-challenges urges for continuous research and development and re- quires closer cooperation across scientifi c domains and integration across universities, research institutions and industry than in the past. In addition, the multiple and to some extent confl icting aims for transport policy have to be taken into account in the research strategy for every specifi c research activity. The radical transformations of the transport sector required to achieve the vision of ‘smart, green and integrated transport’ call for cross-cutting research and research on feasible transition pathways. 49
