CRF II definitions ExCELLENCE Researchers of the highest calibre measured by a combination of publications and patents, documented experience with scientific leadership and well-proven experience with industry collaboration. CROSS-DISCIPLINARITy Performing excellent integrated research that requires inter and trans-disciplinary approaches in order to solve societal challenges; inter-disciplinary being the convergence across disciplines in integrated fields of research and trans-disciplinary being the approaches where different knowledge providers/stakeholders are involved in both problem definition and knowledge generation (co-design and co-production of knowledge). STRATEGIC RESEARCH Research activities that contribute to solving specific societal challenges by delivering excellent state-of-the-art transferable knowledge. INNOvATION Transfer of knowledge leading to one or more of the following 1) commercialisation, 2) sustainable, cost-efficient policy making or 3) new state-of-the-art research activities. ROADMAPS Guiding multi-annual frameworks with clear targets and priorities for the challenge-specific research activities to be undertaken in the forthcoming years; defined in mutual dialogue between elite representatives from all stakeholders. LEAD USERS/END-USERS Main recipient of any given research output; may be civil society, industry, policy makers, politicians or the researchers themselves. 15
