70,000 M2 MORE IN QUADRANT 2 Quadrant 2 is being transformed. The building density will be increased. The oak grove between Buildings 201 and 204 has been felled. Kemitorvet is being shortened by Building 220. Søltoft Plads will be smaller after the construction of the new Building 225. Quadrant 2 will also become better integrated, with the Life Science and Bioengineering complex creating a new indoor meeting venue in the central and high-ceilinged Biosphere. Moreover, the indoor thoroughfare in Building 220 provides a new covered connection between Kemitorvet and Søltoft Plads. Quadrant 2 is also architecturally innovative. Building 220 is a reinvention of the characteristic ‘DTU longhouse’ in that it combines two ‘longhouses’ rising six storeys up. In relatively little space, the Life Science and Bioengineering complex brings together widely differing functions—stalls, labs, offices, meeting rooms—to create a lively and practical research facility. Through the glass façades on the ground floors in both 220 and 202, you can see what is happening behind the walls. The open, light atrium creates visual contact with researchers and staff on the floors above, and supports the vision of openness and knowledge sharing between the various academic fields. Former Minister for Food, Agriculture and Fisheries Dan Jørgensen visiting the Life Science construction site.
