K&P
ENGINEERING DESIGN AND PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT
The research within the K&P section aims at improving the efficiency and quality of the way product development
work is carried out within an industrial context. The main results are theory contribution and methods supporting
synthesis activities within engineering design. Our research is focused on four areas: Conceptualization, Product/
Service-Systems, Robust design, and Modular product architecture development.
New tendencies at the section
The section has achieved substantial new funding within our key research areas, meaning that we have more PhD
students and research assistants than ever before.
In the area of conceptualization, the focus is on developing quantitative methods e.g. by applying data from the
product application as a source for improving concept development. The Product/Service system group is directing
their research into the area of the circular economy. The main idea is to maximize value creation by utilizing
raw material and resources in circular systems, also known as circular models. Robust design is developing
design methods within the framework VMF (Variation Management Framework). Particular method development
supporting the early phases of engineering design is studied. Modular product architecture development is
applying the principles of modularization to maintenance activities of large off-shore oil installations.
Expectations for the year ahead
The section expects to strengthen the area of digital design by appointing a new assistant/associate professor
within PLM (Product Lifecycle Management). Furthermore an assistant/associate professor within general
engineering design is expected to be appointed.
