MTU
MATERIALS AND SURFACE ENGINEERING
The Section for Materials and Surface Engineering (MSE) performs research in the field of materials science and
engineering involving theoretical, experimental, and numerical approaches. The research themes pursued in the
section can be broadly described as: Materials design and surface engineering, Microstructure evolution and
phase transformations and Materials performance and degradation. The research is multi-disciplinary and involves
aspects of physics, mechanics, chemistry, and manufacturing technology.
New tendencies at the section
In 2017, the section has submitted ambitious proposals for new research initiatives with (inter)national
collaborators from academia and industry and looks forward to starting research projects; several of these have
already been granted. The section has been extended with complemetary expertise in materials characterization
by electron microscopy and the effect of thermomechanical processing on materials’ microstructure from the DTU
Wind department.
Expectations for the year ahead
The integration of complementary expertise in materials characterization by electron microscopy further
strengthens the research profile of the section and gives the opportunity for new research initiatives and
advanced courses. An important upgrade of the microscopy facilities for application in education and research is
planned.
