Virology The Section for Virology carries out research regarding endemic viral diseases such as swine in-fluenza and PRRS, as well as important exotic virus diseases including swine fever and foot-and-mouth disease. The aims of this research include clarifying how viruses and animals interact, how disease arises, how viruses are spread, and how this can be prevented. Examples include studies of how influen-za infects pigs and people differently, as well as investigations into how different parts of the swine fever genome contribute to causing disease. The objective is to prevent and control viral infections more effectively so as to increase health and welfare among production animals. Both basic virus cultivation methods and infection studies are performed in the high containment laboratories and animal facilities within the department as well as molecular biology techniques to analyze and modify the viruses in defined ways. Contingency and advice The Section for Virology is also responsible for laboratory-related contingency regarding impor-tant transmissible virus diseases of livestock and fish, and provides research-based advice to, for 27 example, veterinarians, the animal production industry and public authorities.
