7 Diagnostics and Scientific Advice The Section for Diagnostics and Scientific Advice avises public authorities, veterinarians and the agricultural industry, and makes diagnoses based on samples from animals. The large amounts of data are used to monitor for disease in Danish livestock and wildlife, inclu-ding zoonoses with the capacity to cross-infect from animals to people. Contingency response and international connections In the field of monitoring notifiable diseases, diagnostics are performed for public authorities, while diagnostic procedures for other diseases are made available to veterinarians and industry on com-mercial terms. All diagnostic services are based on accredited or quality assured analysis met-hods. Responsibility for the laboratory-related part of the veterinary contingency response in Denmark also rests with DTU Vet. Acute contingency response is triggered by outbreaks of serious infec-tious livestock diseases with the potential to have a major impact on finance, welfare and exports. DTU Vet examine samples taken to confirm or disprove the suspicion of disease. DTU Vet is also the national reference laboratory for a wide range of infectious livestock diseases, and international EU and OIE reference laboratory for selected fish diseases. The work is built on research and international networks, which ensures, for example, that DTU Vet’s advice and diagnostics are based on the very latest knowledge and technology.
