Bacteriology, Pathology and Parasitology The Section for Bacteriology, Pathology and Parasitology conducts studies into animal diseases caused by bacteria and parasites in livestock, fish and wildlife. Another focus is on zoonotic parasites and non-foodborne bacteria and the interactions between host and pathogenic microorganisms. The section also conducts research into molecular epidemiology, the development of diagnostic tools using molecular methods, sensor technology and advanced microscopy, as well as characte-rization 8 of multibacterial societies in intestinal flora, for example. Another area of focus is on the fact that bacterial and parasite infections can be difficult to treat with existing agents, and that there may be problems with resistance. The objective is therefore to acquire more knowledge about these microorganisms so as to allow development of alternative treatment methods. A further goal is to develop vaccines against bacterially based diseases in fish. The section is also working on developing genetically based methods for determining antibiotic resistance in pig herds. This includes development and testing of automated identification and typing procedures. Head of Section for Bacteriology, Pathology and Parasitology Ulrike Lyhs ully@vet.dtu.dk
