A compact Joint for 3D Spherical Motion

What do we offer? Project Picture
We offer an invention applicable of spherical motion and can be
applied for
• Compact active or passive exoskeletons, enabling full, natural
range-of-motion in shoulder, wrist and hip joints, as well as
neck/head support, without the exoskeleton colliding with the
person wearing the exoskeleton.
In a less elaborate form, the device enables orthotics that can
support joints with spherical motion, for instance to avoid
superior migration of the humerus in patients with rotator cuff
injury or shoulder replacements.
While existing solutions in this field are heavy and bulky, this
solution will fit under clothing.
Solution
The novel compact spherical joint uses spatial scissor mechanismbased
linkages, allowing for a very compact design.
The curvature and size of individual linkages can be adapted for the
application, making the joint highly useful in applications where
spherical motion around a joint center with optimal position
control is required.

We present the most compact joint for 3D spherical motion. The invention's commercial potential is particularly
related to the combination of
• Scalability and Compactness of the joint, minimizing the need for space around a center of motion, and the
• High degree-of-freedom to design the joint to fit a specific purpose, compared to other known joints, as the
curvature and size of individual linkages can be optimized for the required movement, securing
• High degree of control and precision, and enabling full range of motion, with three degrees of freedom.
