What do we offer?
Elos Medtech Pinol A/S focuses on design and
manufacturing of medical devices, involving everything
from developing and manufacturing new products over
surface functionalization to final packing and shipping of
components. Titanium is one of the preferred materials
when it comes to producing implants to be integrated into
bone (osseointegration). The idea in this project is to
investigate 3-D printed titanium with built-in functional
surfaces for biocompatibility, scratch resistance and
decorative surfaces for dental implants.
To solve the challenges in both aesthetic and technical
fields, up to now, a number of surface treatments have
been used, such as sand blasting, acid etching, plasma
etching and PVD coatings. However, they are timeconsuming
processes that can result in non-homogeneous
surfaces with the risk of surface scaling. The DTU
developed method of creating functional surfaces results in
stuck homogeneous layers with high hardness and abrasion

What differentiates us?
The technology can be applied to make scratch resistant surfaces on tools used for insertion of dental implants. In
addition to modifying the surface of solid titanium subjects, also 3-d printed titanium items are investigated and it is
is expected that the hollow structure will increase blood flow and thereby the biocompatibility of the implant. 3D
printing technology also allows for a great deal of design freedom. It is expected that the technology can be used for
dental implants, but also for other implant types such as dental bridges, jaws, hip, and knees.
